Flyers must keep their bodies tight, flexible and strong in order to perform cheerleading skills. They have to support their own weight by focusing on upper-body strength, which will help them "lift themselves" as they move into position atop their base, and they also need to hone their balance, focusing on strengthening the core stabilizers of the hips, back and abs. So, in my yoga sequence for cheerleading flyer, I’ll focus on upper-body, core muscle and whole body strength training, and balance and flexibility training as well.
<Strength training>
Upper-body: push-ups, some arm balance, hand stand
Core muscle: boat pose, double arrow, bicycle, lying thigh adduction
Whole body: plank, side plank, crocodile.
<Balance training>
Standing splits, tree pose, extended hand to big toe balance, lord of the dance, eagle, airplane.
<Flexibility training>
Low lunge, humble warrior, wild thing, full forward bend, pigeon, butterfly, wide angle straddle forward bend, happy partner, lying single leg stretch.
